Images of Holland Park, the Royal Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial in London. May 2013.

“Holland Park has 22.5 hectares of gardens and contained within is the Kyoto Garden; a Japanese garden donated by the Chamber of Commerce of Kyoto in 1991.

“It is spread across what used to be the grounds of Cope Castle, a large Jacobean mansion hidden in the woods. It was built by Sir Walter Cope in the early 17th century, who became Chancellor of the Exchequer under King James I. It was renamed Holland House after the Earl of Holland’s wife Lady Rich inherited the property.

“The Royal Albert Hall was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871, and is best known for holding the annual summer Proms concerts since 1941.

“The Albert Memorial was designed by George Gilbert Scott. Unveiled in 1872, it commemorates the death of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, who died of typhoid fever at the age of 42.

“Influenced by the series of 13th Century Eleanor Crosses and other statues in Edinburgh and Manchester, it is one of the grandest high-Victorian gothic extravaganzas anywhere. Officially titled the Prince Consort National Memorial, it celebrates Victorian achievement and Prince Albert’s passions and interests. The memorial shows Prince Albert holding the catalogue of the Great Exhibition, held in Hyde Park in 1851, which he inspired and helped to organise.”
