Ossario di Castel Dante in Rovereto

Ossario di Castel Dante in Rovereto.

“A war memorial cemetery holding the remains of over 20,000 service personnel who fell during World War One. It is located on the summit of colle Castel Dante, a hill just several kilometres from the town centre of Rovereto. Erected between 1936 and 1938, according to designs by architect Ferdinando Biscaccianti, it hosts the remains of Italians, Austrians, Czechs and Hungarians, known and unknown, whose bodies have been moved there from other war cemeteries.

“The upper floor features the altar and the tombs of Damiano Chiesa and Fabio Filzi, the two most famous Rovereto-based irredentist martyrs. On the ground floor a tablet commemorates the Members of the Trentino Legion awarded a Gold Medal of Remembrance.

“To the side of the flagstaff, in the square facing the memorial, an ancient oak tree hints at the town’s heraldic emblem. Castel Dante owes its name to the legend according to which Dante Alighieri stayed as guest in the Castle of the local Castelbarcos di Lizzana in about 1310.”
