Gloucester Cathedral: Nave.
“The nave dates from the last years of the 11th century, and is an ‘outstanding’ example of Romanesque building. Vast cylindrical Norman columns (almost 10 metres high and 2 metres in diameter) carry an arcade of of narrow arches, above which is a relatively low triforium [shallow arched gallery within the thickness of inner wall] and clerestory [high section of wall that contains windows above eye level. The purpose is to admit light, fresh air, or both.] – altered in later rebuilding.”
